88th Avenue Construction Project

The Cook County Highway Department will soon begin the reconstruction of 88th Avenue between 87th Street and 103rd Street.

This is not simply a repaving or re-surfacing of the existing roadway, but a total reconstruction and modernization effort. When done, the NEW 88^th AVENUE will include the following features:

• A 36 foot wide roadway with two (2) twelve (12) foot wide through lanes and a twelve (12) foot wide painted median with left turn lanes at all intersections.

• The existing gravel/dirt shoulders will be replaced with curbs and gutters (with curb cuts for driveways).

• The current open ditch storm water drainage system will be replaced by sewers and underground drainage. The new drainage system includes certain enhancements requested by Hickory Hills to relieve flooding and storm water drainage problems in locations along and near the roadway.

• Sidewalks will be installed along both sides of the street.

• Continuous street lighting will also be installed.

PLANNED PROJECT SCHEDULE / TIMETABLE:

• JULY, 2011 – FALL, 2011:  Utility relocation.  Two-way travel to be maintained with periodic lane closures.

• FALL, 2011 – SPRING, 2012:  Main storm water drain installation.  Temporary travel lane installed.  Two-way travel to be maintained with periodic lane closures.

• MARCH, 2012 – NOVEMBER, 2012:  Major elements of reconstruction, including removal of old pavement; installation of sub-base, curb and gutter and new (asphalt) pavement.  If time, weather and work progress permits, installation of sidewalks and street lights. Only one-way Southbound travel will be allowed.

Beginning in March, 2012 and until November, 2012, traffic along 88^th Avenue will be restricted to ONE LANE and ONLY SOUTHBOUND TRAFFIC WILL BE ALLOWED. Northbound traffic at 103^rd Street will be detoured East along 103^rd St. to Roberts Road, North on Roberts Road to 87^th Street and West on 87^th Street to 88^th Avenue where it may proceed Northbound on 88^th Ave. SOUTHBOUND TRAFFIC AT 87^TH STREET WILL BE ENCOURAGED (BUT NOT REQUIRED) TO DETOUR AROUND THE PROJECT AREA. Signs will encourage the detouring of traffic East along 87^th Street to Roberts, South on Roberts to 103^rd and West on 103rd to 88^th Avenue and thence South on 88^th Ave.

PLEASE … watch out for workers and flaggers …   be patient and considerate … drive slowly and always be prepared to stop safely by keeping a safe interval between your vehicle and the one ahead of you. DO NOT DRIVE DISTRACTED
